Quick answer
What is HIFU skin tightening?
HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. Ultrasound energy is focused into tiny thermal points at set depths, typically 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 mm, reaching the SMAS layer that surgeons tighten in a facelift. The heat contracts tissue and stimulates new collagen, producing a gradual, natural lift.
Seoul clinics offer several HIFU devices, including Ultherapy and Shurink. The doctor chooses the device and line count according to your laxity, facial fat and comfort.

Your visit
How HIFU works at Umi
Every visit is doctor-led and explained in English, from the first skin check to aftercare.
- Consult & skin check
The doctor assesses laxity, fat distribution and skin thickness and plans depths and lines.
- Numbing
Numbing cream is applied for comfort, especially along the jaw.
- Focused ultrasound
A transducer delivers rows of energy at each depth; you feel brief deep heat or tingling.
- Aftercare
Mild tenderness can last a few days; moisturise and wear sunscreen.
Before & after
How HIFU lifts from within
Focused thermal points tighten the deep SMAS layer and kick-start collagen, so the lift builds gradually over weeks.
A subtle tightening as tissue contracts.
New collagen begins to firm the face.
Peak lift along brows, cheeks and jawline.
Is it right for you?
Who HIFU suits best
Good fit if you…
- Have mild to moderate sagging of brows, cheeks or jaw
- Want a non-surgical lift with no downtime
- Want to define the jawline or reduce a double chin
- Prefer gradual, natural-looking change
Consider another option if…
- Sagging is severe — consider a thread lift or surgery
- You are very thin-faced, as volume loss may be the main issue
- You are pregnant or have open wounds or active acne in the area
- You have metal or electronic implants in the treatment zone
Recovery & results
What to expect, step by step
- Same day
Slight redness and swelling that settle within hours; make-up is fine.
- First week
Possible tenderness or numb patches along the jaw that resolve on their own.
- 1–3 months
Collagen remodelling gives a gradual lift and firmer contour.
- Maintenance
Usually every 6–12 months to keep the effect.
FAQ
HIFU questions
Does HIFU hurt?
It can feel uncomfortable over bony areas, as brief deep heat or prickling. Numbing cream and adjusting energy keep it manageable.
HIFU or Thermage — what is the difference?
HIFU lifts deeper layers including the SMAS, while Thermage uses radiofrequency to tighten skin more superficially. They are often combined.
Will HIFU make my face thinner?
HIFU can slightly reduce fat in targeted areas such as a double chin, but in already thin faces the doctor will adjust depth to avoid hollowing.
When will I see results?
Some tightening is visible right away, but the main lift appears gradually over 2–3 months.
Do foreigners pay more?
No. International patients pay the same price as local patients at Umi Clinic.
