Quick answer

What are sun spots and how are they removed?

Sun spots ( solar lentigines) are flat, well-defined brown spots that appear on sun-exposed skin such as the face, hands and shoulders. They are harmless but can look ageing. Laser energy breaks up the pigment so the spot darkens, flakes off and is cleared by the skin.

At our Myeongdong clinic, defined spots are usually treated with spot pico laser or IPL. The doctor checks every spot first, as any irregular or changing mark needs a medical review instead.

How Sun spots works at Umi

Every visit is doctor-led and explained in English, from the first skin check to aftercare.

  1. Spot check

Each spot is examined with a dermatoscope to confirm it is a benign sun spot.

  2. Numbing

Light numbing cream if many spots are treated.

  3. Pico or IPL

Short laser pulses target the pigment; spots turn slightly grey or darker.

  4. Aftercare

Healing ointment, no picking, SPF and a patch or concealer if needed.

Before & after

How sun spots are lifted away

The laser shatters pigment into tiny particles; the treated spot forms a thin crust that falls away, revealing lighter skin beneath.

Illustration of the mechanism — not a patient photo. Individual results vary; real before-and-after photos can be reviewed at consultation.
Day 1

The spot darkens slightly as pigment breaks up.

Days 5–10

A fine crust forms and falls off.

Week 4

Lighter skin; a touch-up if any pigment remains.

Recovery & results

What to expect, step by step

  1. Same day

Spots look darker or greyish; mild redness around them.

  2. Days 5–10

Thin crusts form and shed — do not pick.

  3. 2–4 weeks

The new skin may be pink, then blends in.

  4. Long term

New spots can appear with sun exposure; SPF helps prevent them.

FAQ

Sun spots questions

Are sun spots dangerous?

True sun spots are benign. However, some skin cancers can look similar at first, so a doctor should check any new or changing spot.

Will sun spots come back?

The treated spot usually stays clear, but new ones can form with ongoing sun exposure.

Pico laser or IPL?

Pico is precise for individual spots; IPL treats many small spots and redness across a whole area. The doctor may combine them.

Can I fly after treatment?

Yes. The small crusts are not a problem for flying; just keep them protected and moisturised.

Do foreigners pay more?

No. International patients pay the same price as local patients at Umi Clinic.
